set to music in "Each Day, Each Night."

Once you read past the first verse about the deer, Psalm 42 more easily reveals itself as the perfect Psalm on which to center Evening Prayer. There are two distinct motifs interweaving with each other in the text. Verses 3, 5, and 11 are laments to God, with discouragement, sadness, taunting by others, ending with cries of faith. Verse 8 is the bold cry of faith right in the middle of Psalm 42, "Through each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life." In the night, the psalmist alternates cries of despair with songs of faith and trust in God.

The song "Each Day, Each Night" interweaves these two strands of Psalm 42 with two distinct voices. The first voice sings of trust in God's love. The second voice lays out pain and discouragement before God, and then hope. Then the two voices sing in counterpoint harmony with each other.

Voice 1 - Each day the Lord pours his love on me.

Each night I sing God's songs,

longing for God, thirsting for God,

praying to my God who gives life to me.

Voice 2 - Why am I discouraged? Why are people taunting?

I will put hope in God. I will praise God again.
